Step by Step to the Harvests Vineyard

by uchi-meshi

In its simplest form, vintage is the period when grapes are harvested, but the period when grapes have been harvested for centuries, that is, vintage is celebrated with enthusiasm in different parts of the world. Even in some regions, traditional festivals are held for years. The vintage period differs from region to region and according to the grape variety. It is commonly known as the September vintage period; In fact, September means “eylül” in Syriac, that is, the month of grapes. Also in Hebrew, Elul means harvest. However, it would not be correct to say that the vintage period is September or to determine the exact date. Depending on different factors such as the location of the vineyards, weather conditions, climate, soil structure, and grape variety, the vintage periods vary. In general, even though the vintage takes place between August and October in our country, it is now in the regions that have started to harvest their grapes.

Viticulture in Turkey

Viticulture has been practiced for approximately 6000 years in Turkey, which has suitable climatic conditions and soil structure for viticulture. Thanks to the suitability of the soil and climatic conditions; Table grapes, dried grapes, wine grapes and grapes are grown in our country. After the grapes are harvested, they are separated according to their intended use and processed. It uses separate grape varieties for table grapes, dried grapes, wine and must and is processed in different ways.

Harvest begins when the grapes are ripe. Harvested grapes should be processed as soon as possible. For the production of quality wine, harvesting is done in the vineyards in the morning and/or in the cool of the night. Grapes collected for wine production are crushed and as a result of this process, some grape juice, aka must, is obtained. (At this point, as long as the skin of the red grape comes into contact with the must, the color in the skin and the substance that we call tannin, which leaves a feeling of astringency in the mouth, passes into the must. The longer the grape skin is left with the must, the more red color and more tannic the must is.) When yeast is added to the must obtained, fermentation begins. ; As a result of yeast eating sugar, alcohol content occurs. After the fermentation process is complete, the wines can be stored in steel tanks or oak barrels. The wines are then properly bottled.

Grape Diversity in Turkey

In addition to domestic grape varieties, some foreign grape varieties are also grown in Turkey. Along with foreign grapes, nearly sixty grape varieties are grown economically. The most important table grape variety is “Sultani seedless” and has a market share of approximately 40% in the world. In recent years, Alphonse Lavallée and Cardinal varieties have come after Sultani seedless grapes.

With the awards won by Turkish wines in international competitions, we see that Turkey has started to come to the fore with the successful wines it has produced in recent years. Local wine grape varieties commonly grown in the country are Papazkarası, Karasakiz, Yapıncak, Vasilaki, Ada karası, Çal karası, Bornova Misketi, Kalecik Karası, Emir, Beyçiler, Narince, Öküzgözü, Boğazkere. Foreign grape varieties generally grown in Turkey are Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignan, Alicante Bouschet, Syrah, Merlot, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc. It should be noted that among these grape varieties, wine grape varieties such as Narince, Öküzgözü, Boğazkere, Cabernet Sauvignon, Kalecik Karası, Syrah and Merlot have been at the forefront in recent years.

Spirit of Vintage

I think the best advice to feel the vintage spirit would be to visit the producers during the vintage time. Grapes will become much more meaningful to you in the past when you see and experience how the grapes grown with labor are harvested with enthusiasm and the miracle of nature for a year. In addition, if you are a wine consumer and you are in the 2021 vintage, you can sip your wine more pleasantly because I saw these grapes being harvested from their vineyards while drinking the 2021 vintage wines.
